Project description:
The objective of Prof. Kravanja's research is the extension of an MINLP synthesis environment with CAPE-OPEN interfaces to enable
using existing models. Whereas the current use of MINLP algorithms for the synthesis of chemical processes is often limited to simplified,
equation-oriented models, the use of the CAPE-OPEN standard shall be used as a means to access reliable and rigorous models which can
also be employed in commercial simulation software.
Ultimately, the environment developed should be able to employ modular models (as CAPE-OPEN unit operations) and equation-oriented
models(as CAPE-OPEN equation set objects) in combination. MIPSYN - an MINLP process synthesizer (successor of PROSYN), developed in
collaboration with Prof. Ignacio Grossmann from Carnegie Mellon University, will be used as the synthesis environment to implement the
hybrid modelling scheme. The package relies on the Modified OA/ER algorithm (1) for MINLP, the most advanced MINLP strategies (2) and
uses GAMS modelling and interface capabilities. The solutions obtained so far by incorporating more rigorous modular models in the
optimization procedure indicate that not only the solutions are more reliable than the ones obtained by pure equation-oriented models,
they can be different in topology and can even yield slightly higher profits since the models contains less errors.
