Project description: Advanced model-based technology using CAPE-OPEN
Process Systems Enterprise Limited (PSE) is a provider of advanced model-based technology and services to the engineering and
automation market segments of the process industries, including chemicals, petrochemicals, oil and gas, pulp and paper, power, fine
chemicals, food, pharmaceuticals and biotech.
PSE's gPROMS modelling software is used for the development of products and processes, the design of equipment and entire plants,
and the operation and automation of these plants. Based on state-of-the-art software engineering and mathematical methods, gPROMS
provides unprecedented support for the entire lifecycle of a model, including the initial model development and subsequent maintenance;
the model's validation against experimental data using parameter estimation, and the model-based design of experiments yielding the
maximum amount of information; a variety of model-based activities including not just simulation but also steady-state and dynamic
optimisation involving both continuous and discrete decisions; the archiving and auditing of the modelling trail; and the re-use of
models for subsequent applications.
Benefits achieved
PSE is committed to open systems, and this is reflected by the uniquely-open architecture of its software products. Senior PSE
personnel have been instrumental in the CAPE-OPEN initiative from the beginning, and PSE vision is fully aligned with CAPE-OPEN's aims
and approach. gPROMS supports the CAPE-OPEN thermodynamics socket which allows CAPE-OPEN compliant physical properties packages such as
Aspen Technology's Properties Plus and Infochem's Multiflash to be accessed from within gPROMS models.
Moreover, PSE's gO:CAPE-OPEN (gPROMS Object for CAPE-OPEN) software automatically packages any gPROMS model as a CAPE-OPEN unit
operation object. gO:CAPE-OPEN allows detailed models of complex reactors and separators to be embedded within CAPE-OPEN compliant
flowsheeting tools, such as Aspen Technology's ASPEN+ and HYSYS packages, without the need for any code development. The models can be
of arbitrary complexity, for example making use of gPROMS' powerful capabilities for describing and solving models involving properties
distributed over 1, 2 or more spatial dimensions, and also distributions of other quantities such as particle size or molecular weight.
